Lost Circulation Material

GrapeSeal™

High-performance lost circulation material derived from grape seed, engineered for superior bridging and sealing in all drilling fluid systems. Provides reliable bridging and sealing across permeable, fractured, and depleted formations.

Compatible with water-based, oil-based, and synthetic-based muds.

GrapeSeal™ lost circulation material is designed for use in all drilling fluid systems to bridge and seal permeable formations. The product exhibits minimal effects on rheological properties and electrical stability (ES), making it particularly suitable for invert emulsion systems where ES maintenance is critical.

The carefully controlled particle size distribution of each grade ensures effective bridging across a range of pore throat dimensions. GrapeSeal™ can be used as a preventive treatment, added to the active system to control moderate losses, or pumped as a concentrated pill to combat severe lost circulation events in fractured, vugular, or unconsolidated formations.

Applications

GrapeSeal™ enhances wellbore integrity by establishing effective bridging across variable pore throat sizes.

Lost Circulation Control

GrapeSeal™ is engineered to address fluid losses ranging from seepage losses to severe total losses. The product's optimized particle size distribution provides effective bridging across a broad spectrum of pore throat sizes, enabling reliable wellbore sealing in permeable, fractured, and depleted formations. When properly sized to formation requirements, GrapeSeal™ minimizes nonproductive time and reduces overall drilling fluid costs.

Fractured and Vugular Formations

In fractured carbonates, vugular limestones, and natural fracture networks, GrapeSeal™ rapidly bridges and seals the fracture apertures. The product's natural particle geometry allows deformation and compaction within fractures and vugs, creating a competent seal that resists differential pressure. Coarse and medium grades are particularly effective in addressing moderate to severe losses in these challenging formations.

Unconsolidated Formations

When drilling through unconsolidated sands, conglomerate zones, or highly permeable streaks, GrapeSeal™ establishes an effective filter cake that limits fluid invasion and formation damage. The deformable particles bridge pore throats without creating excessive flow restriction, maintaining wellbore stability while preserving formation productivity potential.

Differential Sticking Prevention

By establishing an effective seal and minimizing filtrate invasion, GrapeSeal™ reduces the contact area between the drillstring and the wellbore wall. This significantly decreases the risk of differential sticking in permeable intervals, particularly under overbalanced drilling conditions where differential pressure across the filter cake can exceed several hundred psi.

Recommended Treatment

Recommended Treatment Concentrations

Loss Severity Concentration (lb/bbl) Concentration (kg/m³) Recommended Grade(s)
Preventive Treatment Anticipated permeable zones 2–10 5.7–28.5 Fine or Medium
Seepage Losses 1–10 bbl/hr 5–15 14.3–42.8 Fine + Medium blend
Moderate Losses 10–50 bbl/hr 10–30 28.5–85.6 Medium + Coarse blend
Severe Losses >50 bbl/hr 30–50 85.6–142.8 Coarse (primary) + Medium
LCM Pill Spot treatment 40–80 114.2–228.4 Coarse + Medium + Fine

Application Guidelines

Mixing Procedure

Add GrapeSeal™ to the active mud system through a mixing hopper or chemical barrel. The product disperses readily in all fluid types without requiring pre-wetting or pre-hydration. For pill applications, mix the required concentration in a dedicated pill tank with adequate agitation. Viscosify the pill carrier fluid as needed for proper placement across the loss zone.

System Compatibility

GrapeSeal™ is fully compatible with water-based (WBM), oil-based (OBM), and synthetic-based (SBM) drilling fluids. The product exhibits minimal impact on rheological properties, fluid loss control, and electrical stability (ES), making it particularly suitable for invert emulsion systems where ES maintenance is critical. No adverse interactions with standard drilling fluid additives have been observed.

Shaker Screen Considerations

Coarse and medium grades will be partially removed by shale shaker screens. Fine grades remain largely in the circulating system. Adjust addition rates based on screen mesh size and observed fluid losses. For severe loss conditions, consider bypassing the shakers temporarily to maximize LCM concentration at the loss zone.

Pilot Testing

As with any additive, pilot testing is recommended before field application to verify compatibility with your specific mud formulation and to assess any impacts on critical fluid properties. Contact technical support for guidance on testing protocols and grade selection.
